69 miles south of Baton Rouge sits Hahnville, Louisiana. There, on an overgrown, untended 710 acres, Homeplace Plantation slowly returns to the Mississippi River Valley soil it sits on. Heavily damaged by Hurricane Katrina, it waits.
Homeplace Plantation was built between 1787 and 1791 in the French Colonial style. The first (lower) floor was for servants and for storage, where you can still see a grinding stone and a butcher’s block. It also has a pigeonnier–yes, where you could keep your homing pigeons, or, alternately, just let a variety of birds roost there for later snacking purposes.
Currently private property, scenes from 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016) were filmed at the property, but it’s otherwise notoriously difficult to get access to. As far as supernatural events, there don’t seem to be any records of such.
Behind-the-Scenes Trivia: your friendly neighborhood GM, C. Patrick, wasn’t actually prepared for Season 6, Episode 7 when we recorded it. He’d misread his calendar and thought the recording session was for the next week. So this mystery was conceived and prepped in about two hours.
If you’d like to find out more about Homeplace Plantation, there’s a Wikipedia entry on it, as well as one on pigeonniers, if you were wondering. There’s also an interesting (and invaluable for these episodes) video by Urban Exploring With Kappy.
